Number of Exposures Remaining Icon Changes When Shutter Pushed

Hello. Received my first Nikon yesterday. I have looked in manuals and online for this question answer but found nothing.

 

In the monitor and the view finder in shooting mode... bottom right there is an icon for "number of exposures remaining". Mine currently says [2.1]k.

 

I have no issue with that, fully understand. But when I HALF press the shutter button this icon changes to [r26], then when I FULLY press the shutter button it changes to [r25].... then all returns to exposure count [2.1]k after that.

 

Please help me understand what this r26 r25 refer to. Many thanks.

It means there is room for 26/25 photos in the camera's burst buffer before it will need to pause continuous shooting to save them to the memory card.  Doesn't really matter much unless you're using burst mode.
