I rather stupidly bought a Nikon 1 J1 with 10-30mm without testing it properly, and it turns out to have a fault which I understand is common - the screen image is usually much darker than it should be and the lens doesn't focus properly. What I don't know is if it's the lens, the camera, or both, and what can be done about it these days - anyone got any suggestions?

The Nikkor 1 10-30 was known to have faults, Nikon were repairing them way after the warranty had expired, luckily the one I bought with my V1 never played up, try cleaning up the contacts on both the lens and camera to see if that helps

Already tried that but I'll give it another go. My inclination is to cut my losses if it doesn't start working, just sell it for spares/repairs, I suspect that any repair would cost more than the £40 I paid for the camera.
