We need a new printer for our home computer so I figured I may as well make it a budget photo printer.

I'm looking into the Canon Pixma ix6820 ($280usd) or Epson HD XP-15000 ($350usd).
The Epson (6 colors) is supposed to make better photos w/ 2 feeder trays (photo and document printing), but only Epson ink can be used. While the Canon (5 colors) is antiquated to use, but can use generic ink.
I'll mostly use it for 11"x14" B/W prints for our hall to try my hand at printing. If something really stand out I'll probably send out for a large quality print.

What papers do you intendent to use? Epsons tend to do much better than Canons with Epson and Hahnemühle papers while Canons work better with cheaper paper stock.

I haven’t used these particular models, but Epson’s 6-ink heads with the grey ink have been the class leaders among consumer printers for black and white photographs for well over a decade now.
