See the below for how I attach the lens cap for my B6000, but the P1000 did not come with that string, and I don't see anywhere on the lens cap to tie it to. I like the B6000 system. Any way to come close to replicating it?

What you need is a cap keeper. It is attached to the center of the lens cap with a strong adhesive.

You can buy lens caps with cord on that internet auction site - or you can get attachments that you stick to your existing lens cap. (Usually the glue isn't great on these.)
I got used to my DSLR lens cap having no cord and having to put it in a pocket or camera case. There's pluses and minuses as lens caps can get in the way on bigger cameras. It can be good to get in the habit of putting the lens cap in a safe place. With interchangable lens cameras, you don't want one cap attached as the next lens may need a different size cap. If you do any wildlife photography the lens cap can bash around causing noise, so it canbe better to keep it out of the way.
Each to their own!
