I have been a forum member now for almost 2 minutes     I have a Nikon 5600 and exclusively use a 70-300 mm telephoto lens. 99.9% of my photography is long range high school wrestling / football / track and wild animals around my house. I use auto focus 100% of the time. This lens is not getting good photo's at 100 to 200 yards. I am considering a multiplier to remedy this. I know how to use approx. 2% of this cameras capabilities so please phrase your answers accordingly.

I don't want to lose the auto focus capability by going to a 2x multiplier. Action is quick in sports and with my limited capabilities I do not have time to set F stops / focus / etc. I need "point and shoot."

I do not need high end equipment, I probably don't need Nikon. I just need a 2x that fits my camera, allows auto focus and extends my range.

So what are my options ?

Thank you

Your 70-300 will not autofocus well with any 2X TC as the AF system works best with f/5.6 or faster lenses and works after a fashion with f/8 ones. The AF-P DX 70-300 becomes a 140-600 f/9-12.6 with a 2X converter.

To get those focal lengths, I would get a used Sigma 150-600 Contemporary as the Tamron or the Sports version of the Sigma are heavier, have their center of gravity closer to the front of the lens and don't match the featherweight D5600 well. The Nikon is a bit more expensive, heavier and is 500 mm at the long end. Mpb have several in stock in good condition. https://www.mpb.com/...All=true&page=3

Peter is correct.  Forget the teleconverter and go to a lens (150-600, 200-500, or a fixed lens) with a better aperture than the 70-300.  I include Peter's recommendation as a better aperture as you are not using the teleconverter.  Even the shorter (1.4 or 1.7) teleconverters will not get you the capabilities of the other options.  Good luck in finding what works best for you!

Gentlemen, you have been a great help to a newbie. We will ditch the 2X idea and go with a bigger lens

Thank you very much
