I shoot my Z5 Lightroom-tethered to an Asus ROG gamer-style laptop using a USB-C cable, in studio, Pocket Wizard tripping my strobes.
Nikon 70-200 f2.8 lens attached using the original FTZ mount.

I periodically get corrupted files like this:
RAW (NEF) FILE: 82.nef (Huh - this file is not allowed to be uploaded, so if you'd like to download it and play with it: https://www.weloveourpets.org/82.nef)
Screengrab of CameraRAW preview: 82.jpg (attached)

An oddity: The preview thumbnail that Lightroom first loads is UNcorrupted, but the RAW (NEF) file shows as corrupted in Lightroom and CameraRAW.

This leads me to believe that the camera is the culprit, though it may be the USB connection (various cables tried, happens on all), or it may be Lightroom, but LR is only the transport medium for the file, which I assume shouldn't modify the file itself in any way.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks!

I've suffered similar corruption on my Nikon DSLRs that ended up being a bad SD card. Since you're shooting directly to the computer, I guess we can rule that out... but the pattern of corruption is exactly the same. Don't know what to tell you. Hopefully one of the other forum members who shoot with Z cameras can help. I'm sorry I couldn't.

Does the Z5 buffer to the card in the camera and Lightroom just monitors the card and ingests new files?

If that is the case, have you tried another memory card, formatted in the camera?

The oddity is because Lightroom always shows the embedded thumbnail in the raw file at first, before it has built a preview from the raw data.

There are hit-and-trial methods that you can use to fix corrupt NEF files, Lightroom can help you but it cannot fix the corruption in photos. To fix the pictures you will require a photo repair software like Stellar Photo Repair. This software fixes all kinds of corruption in photos shot from any popular camera brand including Nikon models.
