Hi to you all my name is Dick I have been using Nikon cameras for over 25 years. I have a few questions on a Nikon macro lens which I bought 3 years ago from J Lewis in London the pictures have always been a touch out of focus and the lens has been sent back 3 times with no luck. I have been in discussion with Nikon and they have advised that I should change the focus from single point to dynamic I cant find this focus setting on the D7100 I normally use, they also advise that I shound not use the lens in manual mode as I use a focus stacking rail on a lot of shots this isnt an option. I have an Olympus 60mm macro lens which cost lest than half of the Nikon it takes far better pictures. Prior to buying the Nikon I had a Sigma 105 macro which I never had an issue with. I just wodered if anyone out there had any similar issues regards to you all.

Have you tried using the AF fine-tune in the D7100? The lens might be within tolerances but need a fine-tune to become critically sharp.

If you move focus actuation to the rear button (af-l/ae-l), you can safely use the lens on a rail without it trying to refocus when you move the rail and without disabling AF.

I never liked the 105 VR macro, but for other reasons. I tried to use it with stacking software and automation using the autofocus but the change in focal length when changing the focal distance is too abrupt when up close, so a lot of manual tweaking was needed to get something useful out of a deep stack. I went back to the 105/4 Ai MicroNikkor and a rail...
