Hi All

I'm a new user here and have a question about a D5000.

The camera always displays the "Cannot format memory card. Card may be defective. Insert another card" message even when there's no SD in the camera.

It won't let me access any settings until I put an SD card in. After that it works perfectly.

I'm assuming this isn't normal - just wondered if anyone had any ideas?

Thanks, Paul

Hello Paul

Switched on my D3300 without a card, which is a similar animal to your D5000.

Message displayed is, 'insert memory card'.

Are you saying it won't format a card when one is inserted?

I think there were some models introduce around the 2009-2011 timeframe that didn't have a separate message for no card in the camera situations with the demo mode turned off.

I know the D300s behaved exactly like this. It gave the same message when the SD card was write-protected.

There can be many reasons for SD card won’t format error. The memory card might be corrupted. Its file system may have turned raw, or your computer doesn’t recognize the SD card at all. You can fix the issue with disk management or using Diskpart.

Thanks for all the answers and sorry for the late reply - I've been away.

All cards will format ok, its just the camera will always say "Cannot format memory card. Card may be defective. Insert another card" when there's no card in the camera.

As soon as I put a card in it's fine. Just wondered if this was normal.

Another update. It will also not fire when 'No memory card?' is enabled in the Custom Setting Menu. This suggests something is not quite right.
