Hello everyone I am looking for a bit of advice. Bear with me it may be a bit convoluted.

I am looking to purchase a new Nikon camera body and I want to rent the camera to "test drive" before I pull the trigger to purchase the camera. I am thinking of buying a new Nikon D850 ( I shoot everything from wildlife, landscapes, motorsports, sports, and macro) and some new glass.

I ALSO have an upcoming trip to Maui and will be shooting primarily landscapes during my trip and I am looking to rent the new Nikon body before my trip (Borrow Lenses. lensrentals.com, etc.).

Best to go ahead and rent the D850 now to test drive while on my trip?

I currently have:

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-85 3.5-5.6G lense

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300 4.5-5.6G lense

Any thoughts on those lenses and any recommendations on potential lenses to rent/test drive while I am renting the body?

Thanks in advance for the advice

Yeah, forget those two lenses.

The 16-85 is a DX (crop sensor) lens which is totally unsuitable for use with the D850 which is a full frame sensor camera.

The 70-300 is a full frame lens. However, it's resolving power is not up to the standards of the D850 sensor.

Two better choices would be a 24-70 f/2.8 for the short lens and a 70-200 f2.8 for the telephoto. I would check with your rental service and rent  the latest version of each of those lenses that will work with your camera that they have available. They should be able to advise you.

I would go even further if the trip to Maui is a once in a lifetime thing and check if the budget and the luggage limits allow getting the full trinity in its last F-mount versions (the ones with an E in their model names in the case of the 24-70 and the 70-200). By the full trinity, I mean the 14-24/2.8 G IF-ED, the 24-70/2.8 E ED VR and the 70-200/2.8 E FL ED VR.

The sweeping vistas of Maui deserve an ultra-wide lens as you are primarily interested in shooting landscapes.

The D850 is Nikon's best camera, so if you don't like it when you rent it, you won't like any other Nikon, so you may as well just go and buy it.

AF lens are generally the older lenses that will only work in the manual mode. AF-S lenses are compatible with all Nikon digital cameras, and have a fast and silent autofocus.

The best lens would be AF-S 70-200.
