I bought a P1000 a little over a year ago. Recently, as in the last 3-4 months, if I don't turn it off after taking some pics it will freeze and I have to remove and then reinsert the battery to get it to work again. The power light will be on, not blinking as in sleep mode, but nothing happens when I press the shutter button or the power button, or when I try to zoom in or out, and the screen/view finder will be black. After I remove and reinsert the battery it works fine, until the next time I take a few shots and then don't turn it off right away. It happens most of the time, but not every time. Any ideas what could be causing it?

Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is , are you using a fast enough memory card and original battery .

If your memory card isn’t fast enough then it can cause issues with video especially if shooting in 4 K .

The same if using an after market battery, it may not have enough current to run the camera while recording video.
Hope this helps.

Five days ago received a new P1000 from Amazon... it takes lovely pictures but has frozen several times....  each time I had to remove the battery to get it working again.  Googling "Nikon P1000 freezing" yields numerous reports...   Someone said freezes sometimes caused by using the zoom lever on the top deck and said using the zoom control on the camera barrel avoids the problem.

The camera is showing firmware Version 1.6.   Has there been any change to 1.6?  Might it help to reinstall 1.6 or has 1.6 remained exactly the same since first issue?

I just bought my Nikon P1000 1 week ago and it has already locked up 4 times; the first time on the day I bought it.  I took it back to the Nikon dealer and they tested it and fortunately it locked up while they were testing.  I have been told by the store manager that Nikon does not want exchanges and once the customer purchases a camera they must deal with Nikon tech for repairs.  This strikes me as a rather unfair practice if the camera was faulty at the time of sale.  I left my camera with the store manager as he will deal with Nikon. Not a good introduction to Nikon.

I'm adding on to this freezing issue with the... We received our P1000 on 1/4/2024. Since then our camera has randomly locked up 4 times. I've only taken pictures with the camera (no video). I haven't used the camera enough to discern a pattern that might trigger the freeze. As others have mentioned, removing and reinserting the battery reboots the camera to functioning. But this is not appropriate action for a brand new expensive camera.

Any insights or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Should this issue be immediately addressed with Nikon technical support?

Thanks.

Contacted Nikon tech support and they helped me figure out the the original battery shipped with the camera was faulty. I charged the extra battery I had purchased and loaded it into the camera. Have not experienced a freezing episode since.
