The question is pretty simply and already basically stated in the subject line. When in manual mode, I can turn the dials (or ISO) and see the affect on the potential images's exposure on the screen, but in Aperture or Shutter Priority, nothing happens. Is that, in fact, normal? Thank you!

When in Manual you can deviate from the average exposure for the “ideal” settings, as calculated by the camera’s algorithm, while in the other modes (Aperture or Shutter priority) the camera can still “compensate” for what the algorithms see as “best settings” (in A mode you should see the exposure time and ISO (if in Auto-ISO) change; when in S mode you should see the aperture and ISO (if in Auto-ISO) change).

I guess, when you push it is A or S mode to extreme values, you will also observe changes in the preview, as the camera will have difficult to compensate)

Hmm, okay, thanks! Guess I'll have to take another look and see if it's just dependent on what values I choose.

The exposure doesn’t change in the automated modes, f/8 1/250 is the same amount of light as  f/11 1/125 or f/5.6 1/500 as long as the ISO stays the same. If you use exposure compensation, the change you make will be shown on the screen, just like in manual as the amount of light hitting the sensor will have changed.
