I just cannot seem to get sharp auto focus with my Nikon 7100 (regular and telephoto lenses).

Seem to get better (brighter, sharper) pictures with my cell phone...

Can I do anything to correct this problem? Does anyone else have the same problem with the 7100?

Thanks!

First, do you have the impression that the AF is working? ie does the camera refocus when you spot on something closer?
If not, check that the buttons on the camera AND on the lens are set to AF.

Have you tried a diiferent lens?

What AF mode are you in (AF-S, AF-C, …) and how many dots do you see when looking through the view finder?

Have you tried focussing while being in LifeView? What is the result?

Best would be if you post a RAW picture with all EXIF data enabled, to help you.

A photo with EXIF data would go a long way toward helping us diagnose this problem.

I agree with the others, we need to see a sample or two presented with the EXIF to be able to help.

The D7100 is equal to my D7200 in sensor quality and autofocus and should be capable of results like this with good technique and a good lens.

Thanks! In your photo you used an AF-S setting.

My camera is set on AF-A. Does that make a difference?

And what is EXIF????

Thanks...

In your picture you used AF-S. My camera is set at AF-A. Is that a problem?

The AF-S in my post is part of the lens name. It denotes a lens with a built-in silent focus motor.

Exif stands for Exchangeable image file format and is a standardised format for metadata about the photo.

The line at the bottom of my post above is the aperture value, shutter speed, ISO settings and the lens used.

AF-A can be a problem as it was a very new technology in the D7100. It is much more reliable in later cameras.

Do you shoot in raw or do you use jpg? If you use jpg or use Capture NX-D to process your raw files, what Picture Control do you use? All third-party raw converters apply their own settings for the conversion, bypassing the Picture Control settings.

What lens(es) do you use?
