I have recently moved from Apple back to Windows and installed my off-line version of Lightroom 6 in the Windows form.  However, it seems that files from my D500 are not recognised and I have now also installed Adobe DNG Converter which seems to work.  However, I have noticed that the DNG files are a bit smaller e.g. about 19k KB vs 23k KB in NEF format.  Does anyone know if this will result in a loss of data/quality?  I am only an amateur and do not focus on every pixel in detail but do want to know that my better photos can be enlarge if wanted e.g. up to about A1 size.  Any comments would be appreciated.

In addition to my post above, can anyone tell me why NEF/RAW files are no longer being recognised by Lightroom 6 on my PC?

How far have you updated your install of Lightroom 6? The D500 needs Lightroom 6.5 or later to handle the NEF files.
If I remember correctly, the DNG is losslessly compressed.

Peter, thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my question.  I have now managed to update to 6.14 and NEF files are being read without any issues.  Very glad that I have not had to move over to cloud based systems.  Iain

You don’t have to go cloudbased, LR Classic still uses local storage and database and PS can be configured for either usage. You can’t get away from the subscription model, though.

The subscription model was a logical development as the Adobe software were among the most pirated apps in the world.

I, personally have abandoned Adobe for raw conversions as I have found other software that handles the raw files from my current cameras better.
