I shoot meteor showers - occasionally I actually capture a meteor!

D5100 set up for interval timer shooting; 30 second intervals, 30 second exposures, 25 shots.  It starts fine, but never finishes the series, usually stops after 6-12 shots.  New Nikon battery, fully charged.  Class 10 card, so write speed should not be a problem.  This has drive me crazy for several years.\

Also have a D300 and it works perfectly; I set both up looking at different parts of the sky.

It would be nice to be able to get back in the car where its warm and let the cameras do their thing, as it gets veeeery boring after the first few hours in the middle of the night, as well as cold. Note that the same thing happens indoors when its warm.

Anyone have any ideas or advice?

Do you have Noise Reduction turned on?

It's the only thing I have seen that may cause the reduction in shots (though I've not seen it impact it as low as 6 from 25, I'd expect about 12).

If not that, I'll leave one of the wiser brains around here to see if they can help :)

What happens if you increase the interval slightly?

It appears that you nailed it.  I turned off the long exposure noise reduction and it went through 25 exposures without a problem.

Now, can you explain why the NR would affect the number of exposures?   We scientists always want to know the "why."

I had tried increasing the interval up to a minute in case the write time was the issue, no joy.

Long exposure noise reduction does a blind exposure of the same duration after each exposure to eliminate hot pixels.

LENR is very useful for single frames, but can really destroy one’s night intervals.
