I recently purchased the D3500 and now understanding more about its limitations which is disappointing. I know it is an entry level DSLR yet I wuol dhave hoped it would have what I think are fairly basic needs.

1. An ability to take a remote exposure with a cable which would also hold the shutter release. There seems to be no remote cable option for the D3500. the only way to do this would be to use the Snapbridge app on a phone or the 10 second timer - workable but not ideal

2. Linked to this is that for Star Trails, I want to take a series of 25 second exposure shots over a 45 minute to 1 hour timeframe. Continuous mode would seem the right way forward, but there is no ability to hold the shutter button depressed for that long with no shake on a tripod as there is no remote cable and I cannot determine how Snapbridge does this.

Any advice is appreciated as I think Nikon have really dropped the ball if this is the case.

Site Supporter

Until I read your post, I hadn’t realised the D3500 was so different to it’s predecessors.

It has no assessory socket for things like remote shutter release.

As it has Blue Tooth, it may support the ML-L7 remote. Unfortunately, Nikon’s site is less than helpful when it comes to the question of which cameras support the ML-L7.

Perhaps a member with a D3500 would be able to comment?
