Hi,
I’ve started to experiment with ND filters on my 7500, but when I click the remote I can see no indication at all that the shutter is open. Just wondered if this is normal for this camera, or, more likely, am I missing something? Have waited 5 minutes a couple of times to find I’ve not taken anything!

Hello

The manual lists

ML-L3

MC-DC2

WR-R10 / WR-T10

WR-1

as remote controls.

For a long exposure, the DC2 would be my choice.

I’ve used the first two on my D3300 without issue.

Which one are you using, and did you make the necessary selection on the camera first?

My question is really, is there any visual indication on the top or rear camera screens to indicate that the shutter is open? There seems to be no way to confirm shutter activation.

If you're in 'live view', the LCD screen will be black, otherwise, no other indication.

If there was some other indicator, it would be a light source that could interfere with exposure.

Hmmm. The live view screen is black anyway as I’ve got a 10 stop filter on. My son’s Canon has a count up timer on the screen whilst the shot is being taken. As it’s on the screen it doesn’t interfere with exposure and at least you know the camera’s doing something! Does the 7500 have a similar feature hidden in the menus somewhere?
