Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and hope I am posting correctly!
So, I own a D3500 that I've used for a little over a year. I realized today that shots are getting blocked in various ways by a black rectangular mass, sometimes a lot, sometimes in the middle, sometimes only a little. Some Googling has told me that the secondary mirror may be getting stuck, and getting in the way of the photo being shot. I attached a picture for reference. You can only see the very top bit of the photo; all else is black.
I tried looking in my lens as I was taking a photo. The aperture goes up and down as it should, and I actually see the mirror flipping up and back down with no problem. The live preview image, and the preview image through my little viewfinder, is fine. It's only in the photo itself does something get blocked.
I have tried sticking a tiny, thin tool (in my case, an earring) into the sides where the mirror is close to the walls, and gently prying horizontally to see if that will unstick what I'm supposed to unstick (as is described in this video). It hasn't helped.
Any advice, or should I just go to a repair shop? Thanks for your time.

Hello
There are two mechanisms within your D3500.
1. The mirror
2. The shutter curtain.
Being mechanical, they can fail in operation.
I would reason that if your fault occurs in Liveview mode (display screen viewing & therefor 'mirror up' mode), the mirror isn't the problem.
Hopefully more experienced forum members will give their opinions.
