There could easily be something stuck in the Barrel, Just take it down to your local camera store and get their opinion, other wise i think its mechanical shouldn't be to hard, How old or damaged is the lens have you taken good care of it from new?

Any experience this issue & fix ideas?

 

I've had very stiff zoom ring due to dry oil.  Just moving it slightly loosened it up- but if there's a mechanical defect, this won't help, of course.

It's jammed tight. This seems to be common with this type of lens. The repair facility I normally use wants $200+ just to look at it.
