I know the FE has interchangeable focus screens, but does the FM? I read some FM can replace screens without taking the top plate off, by unscrewing the screen holder inside the mirror box. Is this true? Finally does anyone know a website showing the available screens? Thanks.

The screens available for the FE -

Nikon FE/FM/FA Series - Focusing Screens

I would leave the FM screen in place. Get an FE or FM2 if you want a B or E screen. I used a screen for the FE2 on my FE years ago, it is brighter. I used the EV control to correct the exposure, which is read off the screen- I used -1/2ev.

I've got an FE and I have an FM coming later in the week. The FE has the Type E screen, which is pretty nice but I'd like a K for it. I guess the FM came out before the FE. I was surprised that it didn't have easily changeable screens...like my Pentax MX. It's not a bid deal as I rarely ever change a screen once I got the one I like. I do like the FE quite a bit and will probably add a FE2 in the future. I've never shot with an FM, but I have used several Pentax MX over the years and I'm ok with the diode metering. One think I like about the MX is the shutter speeds and metering are right next to each other...I'm curious to see how I will like the FM with shutter speed on the left and metering on the right. When I bought my first MX back in 1980 I really wanted the FM, but it was $70 more and in those days, I was still in school and money was tight. 40 years later I finally got my FM

The FM comes with the K Screen as standard.

I like the E Screen better- have it in many cameras.

Post back with how you do with the K Screen in the FM.

I think I like the E screen better also. I do like grid lines and the E screen seems to snap in and out of focus more dramatically. The K screen work fine though except the one I got needs cleaning as it has some smudges from old foam. I got the FM for $40 and it's in great condition and everything works. All that was wrong with it was the dirty screen and it needs new light seals. Since I got it cheap, I will probably send it in for a CLA.

Things I don't like about the FM...the shutter dial is a bit tight and requires 2 fingers to turn. I heard that same complaint often about the Pentax MX, but this FM is even stiffer than my MX. Another thing I don't like is having to shift my eye from left to right to see shutter speed and metering. I ok with the 3 red LEDs, though I think the Pentax MX green, orange, red array is nicer. Overall a very nice camera.

When you send it for a CLA- ask beforehand if they can swap the screen while it is open.

Are the FM2 screens compatible? or does the tab have to be filed off? or can I get FM screens somewhere?

I believe the tab would have to be filed off, but this is easy to do- the screen is plastic. The tool that comes with the screen is used to hold it, using a special tool that comes with the screen. The screen for the FM2 and FE2 are notched, just to indicate type. They will also work in the FE, just need to adjust exposure compensation.
