Why does my Coolpix B600 use fast shutter speed for landscapes?

I noticed that when I take landscape pics, especially like the attached, in both "auto" and "auto scene selector" mode, the camera decides that a fast shutter speed is best. This picture was taken in "auto" mode, but the same shot taken a few seconds later in "auto scene selector" mode has the same EXIF data. Both show an exposure time of 1/1600 sec.

I'm still quite a "newbie" to photography, but this doesn't make any sense to me. Doesn't it make much more sense to have a longer exposure time for these static pictures? Can somebody please explain the camera's logic here?
