I bought a San Disk Ultra Plus 16 GB card for my D40. San Disk says the camera only supports up to 4GB. I' v read that it actually supports up to 32GB. Which is it?

Nikon only tested them with up to 4 GB as the larger SDHC cards were either not in production yet or very expensive. The camera supports any SD or SDHC card but not SDXC.

Nikonphotographer - perhaps you could provide the OP model information on the 32GB card that is compatible with the D40   Then they can purchase something they know should work.

Tom, SDHC cards are 32 GB max, anything over is SDXC and not compatible. The SD cards are 2 GB maximum. There is no overlap between the standards.

To the OP: I would go with fastest SDHC cards you can find from Sandisk or Lexar, but buy them from a reputable dealer as there are lots of fakes on the market.

I know the SDHC cards go to 32GB...I was asking if they had a particular version that they had tried.  I would tend to agree with your recommendation however a specific recommendation never hurts...All good...

The Nikon D-40 supports storage of SD, SDHC up to 32GB. Your SanDisk Ultra Plus 16GB card is a SDXC card and it is not compatible with D-40.

Try using SDHC card with Class-4 to optimize the full capacity of your camera’s storage and you can choose from SanDisk or Lexar.
