is lack of sharpness expected on 1.4g lenses?

At full aperture, focus subject are not sharp. Even at low apertures, it's much better but not sharp
Is it expected for this lens?
Or is it because the d5300 dx has trouble focusing with full frame objectives?

Is it front- or backfocusing or is nothing quite sharp?
If it just misses focus, you have to send it in to Nikon for calibration or exchange it for another sample as your D5300 doesn’t have the AF fine tune feature of the D7xxx upwards cameras.
Even though the 50/1.4 is no 58/1.4 or manual focus 50/1.2, it should be acceplably sharp wide open and just slightly sharper closed down a bit.
Shooting with a DX body, a 50 gives the field of view of a 75 on FX but not the depth of field. It won’t provide quite the separation between subject and background of the longer lens on a bigger sensor.

Hello @audioscavenger
I also have trouble holding a camera still. Generally, I use a tripod.
Although VR is a very useful feature to have, it will only reduce camera shake to a degree.
Fast shutter speeds are your friend!

I expect that it is a typo.
Well, I suspect that some part of that is wrong. But the OP never mentioned the brand.
