Have loved my S9900 for six years and a failure in it had me looking for a new one.  Found out they have discontinued the S9900 and am trying to find out what the next camera is that has equivalent performance. It appears it would be the A1000 but that is 200 dollars more than the S9900 was.  All suggestions appreciated.

I travel in the back country of Washington, Idaho, and Montana frequently and need a small form factor that is rugged and capable of good photos.   I tried the Lumix ZS90 but it had very poor low light performance, and lacked a lot of simple features like quick exposure adjustment that the S9900 has.

The A1000 seems to be the only small form factor superzoom Nikon make. The higher price range compared to the old S series is at least partially caused by the built-in finder.

Another good compact is the Sony DSC-HX80, it might be worth investigating.

That HX80 does look good!  Thanks for that, as it was not on my radar whatsoever.   I just sent back a Lumix camera as it did not have anywhere near the performance of the S9900 at twice the price.  Will look into this lead so Thanks!
