I've gotten into photography rather recently, and I've seen a lot of people blur their backgrounds, so I wanted to do the same thing.

However, no matter what I do, it seems it won't work (manual mode, AF area mode). I was wondering if anyone could give me direct instructions, or the reason why it isn't working.

Thanks!

The small sensor will always make the depth of field bigger than the DX or FX senors in the DSLR and MILC cameras. This makes a greater part of the scene sharp and makes selective focus nearly impossible.

With a good pixel editor, you can blur the background in post but getting results like in the Bokehlicious thread takes lots of practise.

I have the Nikon P950, since around June, and I'm also new to photography.

It depends what you mean by background. The camera will blur the background at any AF stop, not to the same extent of course, but it won't blur something the bird is sat on, e.g. rock, tree, because that is not the background.

As an example, here is a picture of a meadow pipit I took a few days back. You can see what part of the picture is blurred. Aperture is around 6.5.

It will help if you post a picture and point out what you think should be blurred.
