This is a very good read, for beginners especially.

A nice read, and some food for thought.  I certainly do not take my camera everywhere.

I took mine with me today on the way to buy groceries. I drive right by a small creek.

Thank you.

That is the first time I have seen a heron in that creek, and while I was shooting him, he speared that fish.

Just dumb luck.

Dumb luck also often translates to someone just paying attention!  Nice shot!

Even then, wouldn't have mattered unless the camera was ready to go...

I have taken this advice to heart: slow down and keep your eyes open, and have your camera with you and ready to shoot.

You'll be amazed how many opportunities arise.

Case in point: I was watching one of the oh so many bowl games, and so bored to death, started playing with my D90.  Took some shots of the Poinsettia my Mom had sent me for Christmas.  Tried natural light and slow speed.  As mentioned by Alden, "You'll be amazed how many opportunities arise."

Thar's a good shot. I really like the details and colors in the pillow!

That was shot with a cheapo Nikkor 18-55 f3.5 which is proving to be a much better lens than I originally thought.

I've also tried going back to my 18-55 kit lens and trying to get more out of it.

I started carrying a P&S on my hip. I was missed to many shots I came across and wanted  because I couldn't have my regular camera and lens with me for one reason or another.

Link seems to be dead. Can somebody post a summary?

Link seems to work now, and the three points are:

  1. You don't take your camera with you
  2. You're going too fast
  3. You are worried what others might think

The article is well worth reading, as are most off that site.

Never really bothered about point three. However the first two are spot on. I took my main camera on a boat trip through the Norfolk Broads. The slower pace and the fact that I had my camera with me force me to see much, much more. Turned out that having  my camera with me improved my relaxation and enjoyment ten fold.
