I was watching a Youtube vid on how to download the latest Firmware to my camera and the guy was using a memory card and a card reader to transfer the update, but surely, all I need to do is connect the camera to the computer and download the update directly into the camera.

Unfortunately not

The camera looks for a firmware update during the boot process - so it needs restarting (being turned OFF&ON)
`
Also it ONLY looks into the root folder of the memory card, if such firmware update file is available.

Nikon use this old-fashioned method because it is safer as there is less to go wrong compared to using an USB interface with god knows how many accessories attached.

Not Understanding, I want to update the Firmware in my Z 7ii and in the camera menu it tells me it has

C 1.10 and MA 1.10 installed.

Going to the Nikon download centre it showing me that the latest Firmware is 1.20, which I've downloaded, but then, looking in the software updates, there is no MA listed.

Can you help please.

MA is the firmware module for the mount adapter. It updates with the C update if there is anything to update. It only shows in the Firmware version screen when the FTZ is mounted, if you have a Z-mount lens on the camera, you will see the LF version number instead.

Hi Merco

No, I have no Z lenses as yet, I am using the Z2F adaptor, which is attached to the camera at this time.

So if I just update the firmware to C1.20, then the MA number will change if there is a modification. If not it will stay at MA1.10, is that right ?

Thanks

That's right. MA is still @1.10 and LF @1.00

Remember to put the updater in the root level of the card. The camera won't look in any directories.

One other thing, if I am using the SD card to do the update, do I have to nominate the SD Slot as the primary and if so, how do I do this. It does not seem to be mentioned this in any of the upgrade instructions I have read so far but thought that this would be essential.

The easiest way is to only have one card in the camera.
