A delightfully miserable day spent with my daughter before she leaves for three
months overseas. Delightful in every way but the torrid 38°C in the shade. Deli-
cious also because it was my first visit to this region where she has been work-
ing at the local university for some time.
In the foothills of the Alps, a mining town — especially iron ore, which has ear-
ned it the right to be among the elite of rail producers/exporters in Europe and
the world — where gigantic scars of open-sky mining operations disfigure a
landscape otherwise beautiful.
Note the rusty patch showing an iron deposit outcrop in the upper right-hand
part of the mountain.
