I have a Kowa 821-M spotting scope that I would like to put a filter on the ocular lens. Will any 82MM filter work? Can't seem to find out from anyone. It might be a 86MM X 1MM thread but they only sell filters in sizes like 82MM. I would think it would be an industry standard but one never knows.

Thanks

B+W make most of their filters in 86 mm, but they might be special-order at a local store.

I have a feeling that it is the front element you want to protect and not the ocular...

The best would be to measure the diameter of the screwdrive at the front element. You will then know if it is 82 or 86mm.
As for the steps I think indeed it is mostly industry standard, so once you know about the diameter a corresponding filter should work.

I have seen spotting scopes without threads for a filter so that is another item to confirm when measuring as Jerry suggested above...If it has threads, I would expect they would be "standard" thread size for filters...

I stand corrected. It is the objective lens. It is a 82MM scope so it would probably be something like an 86MM X 1MM thread to fit it I think unless you order by lens size instead of thread size. I was wondering if they're industry standard. They advertise Hoya filters to fit Nikon, Canon, Sony and other same size lens. I mostly want it for protection of the lens when stored or not in use to keep dust out. I assume it won't work well when used to view through unless it's pretty high quality.

Thanks for the replies

A quick google has verified that it takes 86 mm filters. Schneider filters under the B+W brand are made from glass from the Schott glassworks, ground using the same techniques as lens elements, but to completely parallell surfaces. They use brass mounting rings so they won't gall as you mount or remove them. They are among the most expensive protective filters, but they can be used on a Kowa scope with very little image degradation.

Hoya filters have a good reputation for optical quality but the threads sometimes get stuck.

Here is a B+W filter from a reputable dealer: https://www.bhphotov..._UV_Filter.html
