Hi I bought and have been shooting my D90 since 2008. Still works perfectly. I am looking to upgrade. I am not a Pro just a avid armature. I shoot mostly nature-wildlife-scenic stuff. I have not really kept up with all the new developments in the last 13 years so I am a little lost. DX vs FX ? Mirrorless ? Looking in the under $2000.00 range. How is the D 500 ?? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks You

What lenses do you have?

Do you want to shoot more in low light than you have with the D90?

The D500 is today's equivalent to the D300. Very fast and accurate AF, big buffer for fast-paced shooting and ergonomics that lets the user do most things without going into the menus.

If you want to shoot birds in flight, the D500 is the best tool for that job.

The modern equivalent to the D90 is the D7500.

FX will give you lower noise levels and greater dynamic range than the DX sensors, but you will need FX lenses to use the advantage as DX lenses don't fill the larger frame. You can use DX lenses, but in crop mode. This will lower the resolution to a lower level than the D90's unless you go for the D850.

If you have any old screw-drive lenses, forget about going mirrorless yet as they won't AF on the FTZ adapter as there is no AF motor.

Thanks for the info. Yes I do have all DX lenses and do not want to buy all new ones and a new body. I do like shooting birds in flight. The ISO range on the D90 is very limited compared to the D500. Again going mirrorless would be a expensive change over for me even though some people are saying that mirrorless is the future.

Thanks Again

The future is probably mirrorless, but for fast action like sports or BIF shots, the DSLR AF still trumps the MILC systems. Nikon are getting there, but it isn't realistic to expect second- or third generation tech to equal technology that has 45 years of constant refinement behind it.

for $2000 can get Z5 or Z6 and be good. but all depends on how many full frame lenses you have. also keep in mind Z6 use XQD cards not cheap and need card reader for C port aka thunderbolt port. not also can get D780 or D750 for your range or D7500 or D500 best bet. but should upgrade to full  frame and see the light how much better it is over crop body
