I have been testing my Nikon 24-120 f/4.0 VR Lens and all I can say is WOW!!! Really. Just tested it wide open at f4.0 and at 3200 iso and at 1/40th of a second hand held on my Nikon D800 using the 5:4 crop mode and what ever complaints I have heard by some, must be coming from people who have NOT actually used this lens.

Focused on the pr of "Spring" Saved at Medium Resolution from RAW to JPEG in PS CS6 so there is compression for this site

It's definitely a great lens, but I tend to stick to primes whenever I don't need the flexibility of the zoom.  Less flare and vignetting, and faster apertures :)  On the other hand, those don't have VR, which is what makes the 24-120 awesome.

The SIgma is coming for $899.  I am considering that lens.  It's a few hundred dollars cheaper.

The Nikon 24-120 is a wonderful lens.  The range was great for lots of my off-field shots (crowd, bench, cheer leaders) during games and for some shooting of the indoor sports.  Unfortunately, the f4 was just not enough for those shots...I need 2.8 or less for those shots, so I sold it and grabbed the 24-70...Since I already had the 70-200, I just have to grab the other camera for the longer shots and I can shoot everything at 2.8...On field, the f4 was usable, but most of those shots were above 120mm...

I have only one VR lens, the 55-300mm 4.5-5.6, and I have to say it consistently get sharper images with the VR turned on than off, from what I can see so far.

It is a new lens. Maybe they finally got the bugs out of the VR.
