Hi everyone! I upgraded to the Z system 5 months ago and am having a blast with the Z5. I believe it is an underrated camera with excellent features and capability for stills photography.
I'd appreciate your collective insight into an odd experience I had two days ago while doing interval timer shooting at sunset. Apologies in advance for the long post below.
I set up the camera in manual mode with 20 second intervals, ready to make exposure adjustments as the sun went down. With the sun in the frame, the initial settings were f/11, 1/8000 sec., ISO 100 with the Nikkor Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR @ 77mm.
All was going as expected, making shutter speed adjustments only until I got to 5 second exposures. I didn't want shutter speeds to significantly exceed 5 seconds since I wanted to retain part of the 20 second interval to continue to make adjustments. So when 5 seconds was not enough, I increased the ISO to 200 and dropped the shutter speed to 4 seconds and moved on. Once I reached 5 seconds again, I increased ISO to 400. All this time, the histogram, which was displayed in the monitor, responded to each adjustment as expected.
However, once I increased the ISO above 400, the histogram stopped responding. By this I mean that it would not move to the right when boosting the ISO. This puzzled me and I tried decreasing the shutter speed, reaching 10 seconds but the histogram would not move to the right. I kept increasing ISO to see if it would respond, given that by this time I had no guidance regarding whether the exposure was adequate for the light conditions or not. The histogram stubbornly remain pegged to the left.
I eventually gave up and stopped the interval timer shooting. When I downloaded the images, the histogram on each one showed what I would have expected to see on camera. Actually, the last few were grossly overexposed from my attempts to get the histogram to respond on camera. I ended up discarding the last images and settling for a shortened time lapse. The on camera histogram is working fine since.
Has this happened to anyone? Any ideas what could cause this and/or how to prevent it?
