Hi,

Looking to get back in to my photography and looking for advice on taking photos at small gigs, basically at small "cellar" bar gigs. I have a D90 and wondered what lens would work well with it?

I'd probably go with the two f/1.8 zooms from Sigma to get the flexibility of zoom lenses while letting as much light as possible in for the *very* dated sensor to work with. The D90 can work, but the noise at higher ISO makes it less than ideal, compared to a later body like a D7200 or D7500.

If you're going to be working at small (read "dark") clubs without flash then you're probably going to be pushing your ISO pretty far. Peter's suggestion about upgrading your camera is a good one, but if you must use your D90 I would suggest that you forget about color and concentrate on black and white. If you look at some very old nightclub photos you'll see how photographers used B&W to create striking images in spite of the inevitable grain produced by severely pushing Tri-X and the other high speed B&W films of the day.

You're still going to need a fast lens, f/1.8 or faster. That would even be case with a newer camera.

Personally, I'd see about trading your D90 for something newer.
