Hi! Apologies in advance for my clumsy question.

I am attempting to figure out external microphone issues on my D3300. Unfortunately, I am both totally confused and technologically inept.

I initially tried an external shotgun mic and an external lavalier mic. (Not sure if I am allowed to post links here to the specific models) When I tried recording, the audio was just blank. Nothing recorded.

I did double check that I was using the correct adapter. So that was not the cause. I tried both mics connected to an iPad, and audio recorded just fine.

Looking in the manual, it says the D3300 does not provide phantom power. Which apparently both of those mics use?

So, I got an ME-1 stereo mic to try (because the manual said that was the kind that worked on this model...I think?). It did successfully record audio. BUT, there was a terrible, very loud hissing white noise in the audio when I played it back.

The camera’s internal mic seems to work fine. Audio comes out clear and good, no hissing.

Could I have just gotten a defective ME-1? Is there a camera setting I should tweak?

If anyone has any experience with this, tips or advice, I would be most grateful! Thanks in advance!
