My first roll of film through my F2 with motor was a 24 exp Fuji Delta 100 and I fired off 3 shots on load to bring it to 1. I then set the motor to 24. When I finished and rewound all the film was still on the right side, as the film got ripped off the cartridge on the last shot. What is a good SOP for shooting 24 and 36 exp rolls with the motor... Just wind 2 shots and set to 24? Or set motor to 23?

I always had it set to the number of shots marked on the canister, but I shot mostly Ilford monochrome, Agfachrome slide and Ektapress colour neg. These all tended to have a bit of margin on the film length. When shooting without a motor, I could usually get 38 exposures on a 36 roll.

How much film do you wind on the take-up spool before you close the back?

I put the leader into the take-up slot and wound 1 then closed the back and fired the motor until frame counter was at 1...similar to what I would do without a motor. Then I set the motor to 24. Apparently that was one too many. My next attempt I'll just feed the leader in and close the back. If I fire the motor once and tightening the rewind after the first shot and see if it's caught on as it should be. Then fire until 1, set the motor to 24. I was just seeing what others do.

It sounds like the roll of film was short. Usually these all had margin, could count on 25 shots or more.

 

The other possibility is the camera is over-shooting the frame. You could verify by looking at processed negatives shot with this body. Some early F2 Bodies had an issue with backlash when used with motors, corrected by bodies with SN > 73xxxxx

I think the one I had on the motor was 72xxxx. I do have another that's 73xxxx and the few rolls I shot without a motor were spaced perfectly. I'm not sure if I processed anything on the 72xxxx body yet... I'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks.

My first question is, is the spacing between the frames the normal 3/16" (1.5mm)? I have never heard of it happening but perhaps the motor is over-winding the film after each exposure. 

I always fire the shutter until I get to "1" on the counter and then set the counter on the motor to whatever the number of frames there are on the roll. Never had a problem.
