I found a AF S 24/85 F2.8-4 D ED lens seller says the lens is excellent ++ The only thing is the AF squeaks. My question is what is the squeak and would it have any long term effect on the lens.

 I searched the internet and found various answers but none were conclusive. Just don't want to make a investment and regret it later. Any info from the people on this site that are in the know would be great. Thanks.

The problem to answer your question is that you don’t have the lens, so can’t give other feedback than received from the seller or seen from ‘the outside of the lens’, while there may be various reasons for the squeak, as you found out yourself.

No one here can therefore give an estimation on the short or longterm impact on the proper working of this lens.

The only thing we can say is that it is not good - but we can’t say how bad it is.

MAYBE that the seller upgraded and want to sell a lens that is working fine for him, despite the squeak. But MAYBE he is worried about the squeak, too, and doesn’t want to keep it. WE DON’T KNOW.

Overall it is for you to decide whether the price that the seller is asking is acceptable to you to take the risk to get a lens that may have issues at some moment and will need to go to the repair (with a yet unknown cost to fix it) - but maybe you are lucky and the lens keeps working fine for you.

Another problem is that it is a lens that doesn't exist... The f/2.8-4 is a screw-drive lens.

I've got a AF-S Nikkor 17-35mm 1:2.8D that has a slight high pitch squeak when the AF is used. I always thought it was a lubrication problem.

The 17-35 usually squeaks a little. The motor in the early version didn't hold up too well with the extra friction, the redesigned one from SN 400001 upwards can handle the extra current draw. It might be worth getting it looked at if your lens was made in 2005 or earlier.

Where would I find the SN on the lens? All I find is "Nikon Silent Wave Motor ED IF o77 Made in Japan" on the barrel. However I did record a SN with Nikon (741039) when I registered the lens. Must have been on the box.

Thanks for the response.I do realize that it would be a risk buying this lens and probably can't get it repaired or cost prohibitive.  I have decided to pass on this lens and keep looking. At the cost of these lens I can't afford to take much of a chance. Thanks

It was in the paperwork when new. On the lens, you can find it on the aperture ring diametrically opposite the f/2.8 marking.
