Greetings, I'm hoping someone can help me with a strange memory card issue I'm having with my recently purchased Coolpix A1000.

I've run into an issue where I can no longer create photos on the memory card if I choose the in-camera options of either "Erase all images" or "Format Card." If I attempt to take photos are using either of this functions on the camera, I receive a message of "memory contains no images" when trying to view the photos.

I then need to reformat the card through Windows to be able to use the card properly again. It seems that I can delete images individually on the camera or through Windows without any problem, but using these in-camera functions to delete all images makes the card unusable.

This is happening on two new memory cards purchased for the camera: SanDisk Extreme PO and and SanDisk Extreme (both 128GB). Both are recommended for the camera and approved as "SDXC" cards. Interestingly, when I use the card that came with the camera (SanDisk Extreme 16GB (SDHC)) I do not have this error at all. The larger capacity cards are exFAT while the smaller 16GB card is FAT32. I don't know if this makes a difference.

My understanding is that using the built in "format card" option is the best way to clear the memory card, but on the larger capacity cards it just makes them unusable.

I have upgraded the firmware to the latest v1.2.

Any advice on this problem would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Cards will only work if they're formatted in the camera, not on a PC or Apple computer. Also, make sure the lock is not engaged on the cards.

Not sure what you mean by "makes them unusable".

Basically the problem is that after I choose the "Erase all images" or "Format Card" option in the camera, it seems to work fine, and the camera acts like the card is there, but once I take some photos and then try to view them, I get a message saying: "memory contains no images." If I put the card into the computer, no pictures show up, even though the camera acted like it took some. The card will only work once I reformat it completely through Windows.

p.s. the lock is not engaged on either card.

Have you tried a Reset?

Can the A1000 handle that size card?  I seem to remember a situation some time ago with a similar issue and the camera recognized the brand of cards but would have issues when the card was over a certain size.  You might want to try a smaller card.  I agree with bluzman regarding the format in camera,  I seriously doubt you will need more than a 32GB card for one day or even one vacation as it should hold over 1000 images...

I tried resetting the camera, but it didn't fix the issue. I didn't see an option for "Factory Rest" only "Reset All" which returned the camera to the default settings.

Everywhere I read says that the A1000 can handle up to 128GB and supports SDHC and SDXC. In fact, the cards I purchased are the two most widely recommended memory cards on every website I consulted.

The camera does in fact "handle" these cards no problem, because the card can be read by the camera and I can take pictures with the card, I can then download the pictures onto my computer with no problem.

The problem only occurs after I choose "Erase all images" or "Format Card" after which the camera returns an error of "Memory contains no images" after trying to take photos.

I agree that 128GB may be overkill for day-to-day use, but I figured if I was taking 4K video, it would get used up quickly. I can try purchasing smaller memory cards (in fact the 16GB card that came with it which is SDHC works fine, but is too small imho), but at this point it feels like throwing good money after bad and I'd like to try to figure out this problem.

Well for anyone that may be interested, I went ahead and bought a Lexar Professional 64GB SD card and am no longer experiencing this issue. I'm not sure if the issue was related to the brand or the size of the SanDisk 128GB cards I was trying, but at least everything is working now.
