I purchased the UC-E21 cable and was just able to transfer images from my most recent SD card but when I changed to my prior card, nothing shows up in the Nikon Transfer 2 app - and they are both SanDisks.  I also tried my Lexar card and had same issue with no images showing up.  Any ideas?

Sure. The question has been posted in one way or another by countless users and the answer is: Use a card reader to transfer your photos. It is always the fastest and simplest way
