HI All...just starting to plan coming over to the 'dark side'  (from Canon) and getting my first Nikon...

My loves are Landscape and Concert photography, pondering a D750 or D7500...or maybe saving extra and going up to a Z6..

Looking forward to reading, and participating in, these forums

cheers

Hello Mike, and welcome.  I was on the dark side myself, in film.  I shot Canon's F1n, and had planned on using Canon digital cameras also, but turned out I like the feel, controls, and quality of Nikon.

For low light in concerts, a D750 would be hard to beat, although the shutter isn't exactly quiet, if that's a concern.  The D750 does most things very well, it's gained the reputation of ''The Goldie-Locks'' camera, as it's just right for so many things.  I just bought one myself for low light photography and am favorably impressed.

With the new Z6 II out there's a glut of hardly broken in Z6 cameras on the used market.  I looked at the Z5 myself and consider it one of Nikon's best kept secrets with many features of the Z6 and Z7 at a much more affordable price.  The compact Z50 looks very good also and can be had as a kit for around the cost of a new D750 alone.

I'm sure Peter will be along to give you better guidance than I can...

First, welcome.
Second, I'm not Peter — and far away of ascending.

Third,

  1. contemplating the very large choice of F lenses and
  2. both readily available everywhere new and used,
  3. considering lenses are the most important investment

I would go more for the D750 — larger pixels, sufficient resolution
for any project… it really shines as an option.

Welcome to the forums!

Depending on the genre, a lightly used Z6 would be the best affordable option for concert photography. The Z5 has much less DR than the Z6 and the slow readout or AD-conversion reduces the throughput to 4.5 fps for the Z5 compared to the Z6@12 fps. If the mirror and shutter noise of the D750 is acceptable, it is a very nice event and concert camera. There are lots of older lenses in F-mount on the used market, making it a much cheaper option than the Z6.

The D750 is nice, but an older FX, or even a DX body works well for low-light use...

Here is a thread with some concert photos I did using D7200 (DX), D700 (old FX) and D750. Live music 2018-02-13 - Post Your Photos - NikonForums.com If you click on one of my photos in the thread, it will take you to the gallery where you can see what body was used for which photo.

If the F-mount lenses you want to get are AF-S rather than the old screw-drive versions, the Z6 works well with the FTZ mount adapter.

I, personally, don't like the D7500 as the lower corner digs into my hand when not using a grip on the enthusiast bodies, so a vertical grip is a must *for me*.

Thanks for the comments all!   Plenty to think about, I have always been nervous of used cameras, but maybe its time to put aside my prejudice...tempted to save and buy a used Z6, then with an FTZ convertor I can have a serious think about lenses.

Great pics Peter!

cheers!

Let me add my welcome. I own 3 of the cameras that have been mentioned already...D7500, D750 and Z50. For low light situations, I'd say the D750 is the right choice and it will also serve you well when shooting landscapes. For fast action, the D7500 is my choice...I don't have any of the issues with it that Peter mentioned. I got the Z50 with the two kit lenses just to dip my toe in the mirrorless water. I've been pleasantly surprised with it using the kit lenses but it's not up to snuff for fast action.

FWIW, based on my own experience, I'm a proponent of buying renewed/refurbished or used gear, both camera bodies and lenses.
