I’m not sorry for being a marketing whore but it’s not easy to be a Nikon fan boy with all the new releases now
Sony is on b and h for 6500$
Finally a Sony flagship is ready
50 megapixel sensor at 30 frames per second electronic silent with no blackout no flickering no distortion no rolling shutter
Real time af all over the sensor on humans,birds and animals no compromises
The funny thing is that I was looking for a used D5/D4s on eBay couple weeks ago
Not anymore
I would like to thank Sony for proving who’s the Daddy here and who is the real Grinder who invested in developing new technology when at the same time Nikon was trying to sell the 100years anniversary (like somebody gave a damn)
It’s crystal clear that Nikon can not Compete, they can’t even follow the wave

one hundred million (100,000,000) candelas per square meter. So
the 15 stops of DR are nothing worth writing home. 

The D850 has 14,8 stops of DR… worth the fuss? ​The D850 has
4,3 less MP… worth the fuss? Nikon has much better placed con-
trols and ergonomics. If Nikon brings out a D8XX with 60 MP, try
to stop me rushing to get hold of it — that would be a 33,3% in-
crease of the actual pixel count. Are Sony's 10% worth the fuss?

Lol I don’t need a d850 for my style of shooting ! I prefer my D500
But since you are a proud d850 user I would like to ask you something
Could you please make a research on the Sony a7R IV and check the numbers ?
Would you dare to rent one and try it for 1 week to see the difference ?


I’m assuming that you already know that Sony designs and sell every single sensor for Nikon, Fuji and Hasselblad!
Also you must know that Nikon is a small company with a Massive loss owned by Mitsubishi and please disagree if I’m wrong
Nikon can’t compete with the brands ! It’s Crystal clear to me
There’s no such a thing like Nikon has better DR or better ISO performance than Sony equivalent ! Maybe better jpeg colors out of the camera Nikon rich fan boys saying that! Let’s be real, we are not in 80’s anymore!

thing about mirrorless and extreme numbers… I'll leave to the next
generation — meant here are my sons. I succeeded to grow a fami-
ly of 4 with my trade that was all based (in regard to 35mm format)
on Nikon. What ever the numbers and Nikon's position on the mar-
ket, I am still producing "decent" pictures with my tools.

I don't want to disagree on anything with you, Bobby — or anyone
else for that matter — I am surprised by your enthusiasm in regard
to infinitesimal progresses competition is forcing on the industry.

Nikon has made a lot of mistakes lately. I own and use a lot of Nikon lenses, and the Nikon Df is my only DSLR that gets any use. I own mostly manual focus lenses, and AF-D autofocus lenses. 

 

The Nikon 1: that was a DOA mistake that paid lip service to mirrorless, but ultimately put Nikon way behind.

 

The new AF-S lenses? The AF-D Micro-Nikkor lenses outperform the new ones. AF-S lenses in general- seem to break a lot more often than what I'm used to in the Nikon line.

 

The Z series- might consider it for manual focus lenses used on adapters, or just buy a Leica M240 or M10. Have not made up my mind. The size of the fixed-focal length Z-Mount lenses is insane. I spent as much on my Nikkor 5cm F1.5 as the Z-Mount 50/1.2 cost. The latter - I'll stick with my 50/1.2 Ais. The Z-Mount 58/0.95:  4x the cost of the 50/1.2, and even bigger. Do people buy it just to brag? I'll stick with my 50/1.1 in M-Mount.

 

I've used Nikon for over 40 years. Probably 100 Nikon lenses in various mounts: F-Mount, Leica Mount, Contax Mount, and of course S-Mount. Nikon needs to get their act together.

 

As far as Sony is concerned: they finally gave an alternative to their lossy-compressed raw mode, Now if they learn how to make a filter stack for a mirrorless sensor, I would consider it. As it is: poor performance with lenses designed for rangefinder cameras.

 

Maybe I'll use my 100th anniversary Nikon Leather Neckstrap on the next Leica I buy. After all, it will be shooting with Nikon lenses made over 70 years ago.

Am I living on the same planet?

It is normal for some products to need service now and then
but my experience with Nikon was greatly positive increasing
my level of trust in the name over the past forty years.

Mind you, I only use a high end selection of gear — bodies &

lenses —  knock on wood, nothing has ever failed or needed
to be returned for service.

The Nikon Noct 58mm f 0, is an amazingly sharp lens wide open. It’s second to none
It made Leica equivalent look like a cheap Chinese knock off
Hats off for Nikon lenses but it’s not enough
Leica is very expensive hobby for me that would not justify their prices!
Plus there is a cheaper medium format Fuji alternative with very interesting features
I'd really love a pair of 2000$ Leica binoculars for their Superb contrast but I already invest in GPO brand!!!

My friend at work is setting up a portrait business, bought the new AF-S Micro-Nikkor 105/2.8, told me it did not seem sharp. Tested against my AF-D 105/2.8, she is right.

She also bought a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR II. It needed a complete rebuild.

 

I gave her a 24~85 AF-S that I picked up for $25 that someone tried to fix themselves, took a few minutes to repair. Also gave her my 70~210 AF-D zoom. I've talked a lot about Nikon at work, recommended it to people. 

 

I don't like the size of these new Nikon monster lenses. I will not be buying them.

 

Leica can be expensive- I bought many lenses before the digital age, also modified lenses for use on a Leica. I paid for the M9 and M Monochrom selling lenses that I converted to Leica mount. Have about 120 lenses in Leica mount, 20 of these are made by Nikon. I will not be buying anything in Z-Mount.

I do not have any idea about people portrait but I’m a sucker for a pop with a creamy bokeh
I’ve seen a comparison between Nikon 105/2.8 vs the Sigma 105/1.4 on a D5 from a verified Nikon user
Sigma was obvious a better lens at f\1.4
All the 70-200 suffer from ghosting wide open but the new S seems like a better lens overall
Personally I don’t have experience with either one
Looks like all the new Z lenses are better lenses without coma, astigmatism or chromatic aberration
At least you are paying premium for something that is perfect wide open with serious edge to edge sharpness

Also you should check this one from z mount
It’s crazy sharp Wide OPEN with exotic microcontrast, plus it’s light and ridiculously cheap 50mm 1.8 S line that I’m really interesting!

I agree with NS, the controls and ergonomics are more important to me than any tech specs.  In this regard Sony is years behind.  If I gotta fumble with it, I'm tossing it!

If you are talking about the A6x00 range of camers then yes. But the A1/9/7 series has more controls than you could ever want. People talk about how bad the Sony menus are, well I haven't seen the menus in nearly 3 years of Sony ownership. Set the camera up and there is so much customisabilty that there is absolutely no need to go into the menu.

And people saying they don't need progress and can use their current cameras just fine.... I almost feel like I am back at Pentax Forums. Nikon may as well just stop making new cameras and sit back unitl they go out of business.

I personally hope Nikon (and Canon) follow suit anbd release a flagship mirrorless camera. These are not supposed to be for everyone. But every brand needs an aspirational product for their users to lust over. The D5/1Dx is no longer that product.
