I've noticed lately that when I try to take a photo the shutter won't work. Most of the time it's fine but I've noticed when I try to take a photo and the D3500 just doesn't want to shoot. I'm using the 18-55 mm lens and Aperture setting.

What would cause it to not shoot some time? Exposure setting? The battery is charged so its not low power.

Maybe it has to do with focus acquisition where
the shutter won't work unless focus is confirmed
— if that feature is available that is.

Unlike the more advanced Nikon cameras, the D3500 doesn't permit the user to choose if pressing the shutter button (1) initiates an attempt to focus or (2) immediately takes a picture whether focus has been achieved or not. Because the former is how the D3500 is fixed to operate, Nikon Shooter's suggestion is correct. Unless focus is acquired, the shutter is inoperable.

How would you get focus confirmed? Most of the time it focuses, what would cause it not to focus?

I'm not familiar with your camera model but surely
some wizards will chime in… just be patient! :P

Several things can cause an inability to focus, most likely a lack of contrast in the focus location.  It could also be that the camera could not adjust the other exposure settings based on the aperture you chose.  Lastly, if you were using the internal flash or had an external flash attached, the camera won't fire unless the flash is charged and ready to go.
