I'm not opposed to a simple wired shutter release, I've been using one on my D700's and am rather satisfied with it. I am looking into an intervalometer for a newer camera, (D750) and would appreciate any guidance or opinions. I'm looking at the Nikon Ml-L3 and an SMDV T808.

The D750 has a good built-in intervalometer. You just need an MC-DC2. I used the wifi remote capabilities for years with my D7200 and D750 and an iPhone with WMU.
Nikon Shooter, the MC-36A is 10-pin, isn't it? The D750 uses the DC2 connector.
The ML-L3 is not a good remote as the sun will drown out the signal now and then, making it unreliable.
