My D70 digital Nikon has developed sticky surface that makes the use of the camera unpleasant?

How do I clean up the sticky surface?

A student of mine had a similar problem
and solved it using a "plastic cleaner".

Can you recommend the cleaner to use so that I do not cause more problems?

Meguiars plastic cleaner should be at least as easy to get on your side of the pond as it is here and it works well without attacking the base material. Armorall dashboard cleaner is another one.

I wouldn't say that it is a substandard material as it usually takes 12-15 years for the surface to get sticky unless the camera is stored in an ozone-rich environment.

of course its sub standard materials because the surface materials lose their integrity and become stick and the camera is unusable? I have a camera that goes back 60 years and the surface covering is not sticky?

What is surprising is that Nikon has not researched the problem and provided solutions to dealing with the stickiness but has left it to amateur enthusiasts to suggest solutions, to the poor quality material degradation.

The materials were not sub-standard but standard for the day...I have seen the same problem on cameras from other manufacturers.  I remember a medium format a friend had that had a similar issue.  I inherited a 35mm that also had the issue.  I believe there is a thread here on the site where one of the members removed the failing cover and replaced it with a leather cover.  Bottom line is that if you don't like it, you can fix it or sell it or donate it.  While you can also throw it away, I would urge you not to as I am sure someone will take it...

If you'd ever really want to throw it away, TBonz's idea is not so good.
I would rather suggest you give it to someone you hate!  :P :P :P

Just do one of these and move on.
