I know this sort of topic comes up a lot but given the choice and quality of equipment on offer today and the labyrinthine variety of often sketchy or uninformed advice it's not surprising that when it comes to deciding on a change you seek knowledgeable recommendations.

I would like to get a full-frame camera but am really torn between going mirrorless with the Z6 and the cheaper D610, D750 or D810 - good used examples of the DSLRs can all be had for under £1,000.

I have a number of both DX and FX lenses used with my D7500 and want to keep that for the extra reach for wildlife and a bit of astrophotography but am drawn to full frame for the extra image quality - I enjoy printing to A3 quite a bit.

So, any experience, advice or recommendations would be very gratefully received.

Looking at the different camerabodies that you are looking to:

- the D610: I would drop from the list if you are also looking for the D750. The D750 is basically a more recent version of the D610, with improved technical features. The one reason to get a D610 is the lower cost for a camerabody that is in a similar condition.

The strong points of the others are in my view:

- Z6: the weight / less mechanical parts
Though not sure how it balances with your 150-600 zoom

- D750: ergonomics are identical to your D7500

- D810: the 36MP sensor

Why not look at the Z5 for a full frame  mirror-less option?  You can buy one new for about the same price as a used D810, it can take the same batteries as your D7500, and uses 2 SD cards instead of the expensive XQD cards of the Z6 and Z7.  Used Z5's usually cost less than a comparable used D750. 

 

I'm shooting D700's now and as I love them, I may think about more resolution soon for myself and the Z5 is among the bodies I'm now considering along with the D800 and D810.

First of all, what lenses do you have? The Z6 or Z5 need AF-S or AF-P lenses for the AF to work on the FTZ.

The D810 is a bit more demanding when it comes to the optical quality compared to the D750.

Like Jerry, I would drop the D610 from consideration today as the D750 is a considerable update from its predecessor.

Merco, all the lenses I have for my D7500 are AF-S or AF-P.
