In my D500, I have my primary slot as my XQD slot for RAW. For the secondary slot function, I’ve selected RAW primary + JPEG secondary. To me, this would suggest the SD card will record JPEGs only, but when I press the info button, it shows XQD as RAW and SD as RAW. What am I missing here?

Indeed the option you describe should save RAW (NEF) files to the XQD card, while saving the JPEG versions to the SD card.

I would first check what is on both of your cards by inserting f.i the SD card into a cardreader connected to your computer and the then browse it.

If you have RAW files on both of your cards, check whether you didn’t set unintentionally the option for the SD card to backup for the XQD card.

It's because the image quality is set to NEF (RAW). So, you will also need to choose the quality of the JPEG version in Menu > Photo Shooting Menu > Image Quality. e.g. NEF (RAW) + JPEG normal.

Or, perhaps you have set the SD card as overflow or as a mirror / backup...

Try the other setting.  Maybe JPG for primary will record jpg when an XQD card is in the other slot.  When the XQD is out maybe it switches to Raw.

I fail to get the benefit of this suggestion…
surely I must be missing something!

Might be, which is why you try.

if you remove he primary card, the secondary one may act differently based on the settings

The XQD card is the faster card, so most people would prefer to send their larger RAW files to the XQD and their smaller JPEGs to the slower SD card which is one reason Nikon Shooter said what he did.  I don't see any benefit either.

Recording to XQD, the D5 can shoot up to 200 shots Lossless 12-bit or JPEG/Fine/Large or 14-bit lossless compressed. Maybe it was in overflow mode, in overflow mode with NEF+JPEG both files go to the primary card.
