When capturing an image of a lighted Christmas tree, is it possible to get the star effect using small aperture settings? I tried with my Z50 using the 16-50mm kit lens and also using the DX 35mm F1.8 lens with no luck.

In Aperture Priority mode, I set the aperture to 22 with lowest ISO (100). I had the camera on a tripod with self timer. Am I missing something? Any help would be welcome.

Both those lenses have rounded aperture blades, made to minimise diffraction stars. It might be worth trying some immediate f-stops as the aperture is at its roundest fully stopped down and wide open.

Try shooting a series using apertures from wide open to fully stopped down at third-stop intervals using both lenses, you might get some nice stars at some setting.
