This thread is suggesting serious fun. Imagine the dream

lens you would like to see, to have… and forget all about
price and psychics, weight and size, just dream!

I'll start.

I dream of a IF 300 ~ 800 mm, make it a ~ 1000 mm ƒ8 ƒ4.
I don't care about IS of any kind. Weather sealed and it
should be black of course.

The implied weight of the monster begs for an anti-gravity
system of some kind as going in the wild with a crane may
prove to be most unpractical! :P

…just dreaming!

My dream lens would be less Science Fiction...

A 105 DC without the CA when defocussed and without the noisy screw-drive.

The need for a portable anti-grav device qualifies...

Defocus control without CA is probably also in the SF realm, but one can dream.

Good thing you included the anti gravity device, my 80-200 2.8 D IF is about all I care to carry for very long without it.

My dream would be more for the camera body Nikon didn't make, I'll start a thread in FX camera's for that.

How about a 10~1000mm f/1.0 that's about the size and weight of an empty beer can? :P

Oh, and I forgot... it has to be an internal focus, internal zoom lens. None of that creepy barrel lengthening when zooming or focusing. Oh, and make the size... half an empty beer can. Donno what I was thinking before. Jeeze, a whole beer can. That's just nuts.

IF and IZ are prerequisites of course!

Yes, half… just the right size!  :P

Ron,

You left out one key qualifier on the 10-1000...It has to sell for under $500...Back in the mid-80s I worked part time in a camera shop and, you would be surprised at how many folks asked for something like this even if it wasn't to that  extent.  Maybe a 24-500 f2.8 or so...and cheap....

and they also had this silly dream that it would focus itself...that was right before the early auto-focus gear was released.

I forgot…

the minimum focusing distance should be at a metre or so
for the long lenses… if I may!

Jeeze, how I could I ever have forgotten all that other stuff. I guess I emptied too many beer cans before answering.

Yeah, it's gotta be cheap. As in REALLY cheap! Like so cheap that they actually pay you to take it home. But, at the same time, built like a tiger tank with only the best parts and pieces. Low dispersion glass and fluorite lens groups. And, it's gotta be macro.... and by macro I mean microscopic. And, brain driven motorized auto focus  You think it, you've nailed it. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Oh, and with an ironclad triple your money back guarantee, same day replacement if you happen to drop it. But, of course, since it's built like that aforementioned tank, dropping it would actually crack the earth and split open a wedge in the space time continuum. But who cares about that stuff?

If they really, really wanted to be helpful, they could *cosign variable aperture lenses to the dustbin of history. Completely... and forever.

*consign, dammit!

Thank you, no. I have enough trouble dealing with current politics. And besides, I wouldn't stand a chance against Alfred. Even I'd vote for him over me.
