There's something about mechanical cable releases that just feel right. Something self timers and remote controls can't capture. But I can't seem to let the old ones go. Still in my bag? I wish Nikon kept this feature with their digital camera designs. Everything should not be accessed by menu's & battery's. I would prefer to screw in the cable release than search for the setting for the remote control.

I still use my old Kaiser mechanical release with the oh-so-nice soft release button for the F4E and the Rollei 6008. It is a nice piece of kit, but the MC-30A remote cord I use for my D300 and D700 has a nice feel to it as well and doesn't mean diving into the menus to get it to work. The MC-DC2 I use with my D7200 and D750 doesn't feel quite as nice, but it works reliably and just plugs in. The MC-DC2 should work with your D7500 as well.

I certainly don't miss them, the mechanical one, though I had
to use them every day in the film days. No nostalgia.

Today, the the MC 30A and the MC 36A are my standards.

Agreed, I use an MC 30A on my D700's and it's not much different than a cable release.  I'm happy with it.

You're right to be, my friend, but there are BIG differences. There is no inner
mechanical resistance thanks to the electric contacts and that allows greater
precision on the trigger
moment. In every aspect better… but nostalgia. :P

I never liked the Hama and Nikon branded cable releases, but the Kaiser is in another league...

My D7500 will need the square electric connector [MC-DC2] Thanks for the info.

I have an older Nikon remote control that will work with my new body but I don't like using it much.

You're right, there are big differences in the way they work, but the feel being tethered to the camera, (thumb on a button) is much like a cable.  When mounted on a tripod, I like the feel.

I also use the MC-DC2 on my Nikons and they do work reliably enough. However, I'm sometimes convinced that I'm going to have one fall out of the socket at the wrong time, which is why I fiddle with a cable block when using my Kirk L-bracket... and that would pretty much be all the time.

I sometimes wish that Nikon had just standardized on the screw in cable release system across all of their DSLRs.

I use a release quite often on my Rollei TLR f3.5 f.
