D750 self timer stays active

I shoot off a tripod using the self timer set for 2 seconds almost all the time. I recently wanted to grab a quick, hand held shot so I adjusted from timer to shutter mode and the self timer seemed to still be active. I adjusted to CL/burst mode and there was also a timed delay between each exposure. Any ideas why the timer might stay on it's not in timer mode? Thanks
