i used my nikon d7000 with following manual mode
Aperture 6.5
Lense used - 50mm f1.8
Shutter speed - 20 sec
Tripod.
You can use IOS 1600 and decrease the shutter speed. But, the quality will be not that good. So, I recommend people to test the shot with higher IOS and later on use the slow shutter speed to capture the images.
P.S it was taken from the backyard of my home. So, it would be much better from a dark place

Thanks for sharing your image and the settings you used. Interesting that you have done this in your backyard and not in a really dark place.

Why not use a wider aperture to get a faster shutterspeed?

I wouldn't go with a wider aperture or at least TOO wide, but when shooting the sky it will put all the stars in focus no matter what aperture you use.

When you were saying don't go too high with the ISO the D7100 is a killer man, the ISO capability is awesome iv done a few shots at night HAND HELD! and they were amazing.

But normally i would use a tripod

have the aperture around 3-11

shutter speed at any speed really that works from 0.250 of a second to 30, (Unless its sunset or Rise i would use ND filters and have a time of about 10-20)

and any lens that could go wide i feel, so 24mm or lower.

I usually go full open and around that shutter speed with good results.
