Today I was chatting with some people who claim they are familiar with the ways of Nikon.  From what they have informed me is that Nikon has seriously changed the way it does business.  For example, now there is only one authorized service center in the state of New Jersey.  Nikon appears to no longer support more and more models including the amazing D700.

Also, having to send an item in for repairs to Nikon can and does take a very, very long time and the expense can be cost

prohibitive and of course Nikon does not pay for shipping at all.  These folks seem to fear that Nikon may be going in the direction of Olympus Corporation by selling off their photographic equipment operations and focusing mainly on their scientific division products such as electron microscopes, etc.

I also expressed my interest in upgrading to a D750 or even the possibility of a D850 and I could not believe the look of surprise and shock on their faces.  They proceeded to tell me that these models are not what they are cracked up to be and that I should be considering looking elsewhere for a serious upgrade.  Thnx for reading.

Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during these pandemic ruled times.

Kind regards,

Tony

They're quite right… they are better! :P

More reliable — in my experience — with stellar performance.

Stay safe too, chap!

Tony, the D750 and the D850 are probably the last FX prosumer DSLR bodies. The lack of provision for a vertical grip in the D780 sets it firmly in the consumer class as far as I am concerned. The way forward will probably be MILC-s only, possibly with a DSLR as the top pro body for some years to come.

That said, they are both extremely capable cameras in the right hands.

From what I've read, there is no longer any authorized service center in the US, the Melville service department is part of Nikon USA.

Okay, just got this off of Nikon's website.

Important Notice Regarding California Service Facility:

Our first priority remains the safety of our customers and employees.

In compliance with California Government mandates regarding Covid-19, operations are currently suspended at our Los Angeles, CA service facility.

Repair services are currently available to all customers at our New York facility, including those mailing-in product, as well as walk-in / counter service.
For walk-in service, please be aware that customers will be required to observe the safety protocols in place at these facilities.

We would like to ask for your patience, as an increase in repair turn-around time is expected due to the increase in transit/delivery time as a result of COVID-19.

Please contact Nikon Customer support at nikonusa.com/support for more information. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.  Tony

I do wonder if Nikon has any repair facilities in Mexico or Canada.  It would be pointless to have to send a camera all the way to Japan as the shipping costs which will include insurance would be astronomical.  All we can do is wait and see what happens.  At least they do have one facility here in New York.

Cheers,

Tony

I do wonder if Nikon has any repair facilities in Mexico or Canada.

Nikon has ONE service centre in Canada and it is 4,000 Km from me.  Last time I send in a camera with a mic for them to check per their request - first, they lost my mic in their shop and then they return the camera to a dealer 900 Km away from me.  It took countless phone call, e-mail and about three months to resolve.

PS: Both Canon and Sony also have only ONE service centre in Canada.  Sony has asked me to send in a camera for cleaning which cost $40+ to ship.  My local camera repair guy did that in half day for the same amount of money.

At this point, using Nikon gear since 40+ years from Anglophoto to
Nikon Canada and now Nikon Europe, I never needed to have them
do any repair — knock on wood!

Every year passing by without the need for repair confirm my original
trust in the brand and the products. I did hear horror stories through
the decades but I was spared them.
